Just a Chill Guy – this meme that has gone viral on TikTok (the overseas version of Douyin) has been brought to the blockchain by crypto enthusiasts, and within a few days, its market capitalization surpassed 500 million USD.
Smart money in the meme space has profited immensely, with one player turning an initial investment of 1,000 USD into over 1 million USD in less than a week.
Just a Chill Guy (CHILLGUY) is a meme coin based on the Solana blockchain, created by artist Phillip Banks in 2023. This anthropomorphized character is dressed in a sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers, with hands in pockets, embodying a "chill and relaxed" expression.
This character exploded in popularity on TikTok, beloved by the post-2000 generation, becoming a "spiritual totem" for the new generation, representing a lifestyle attitude of "Buddhist, relaxed vibes".
In just a few days, the market capitalization of CHILLGUY skyrocketed from 10 million USD on Monday to 488 million USD at the time of writing this article. On-chain data shows that a lucky trader seized the opportunity to profit over 1 million USD from an investment of just over 1,000 USD.
A wallet holder starting with "9zW" invested 233.89 USD when CHILLGUY first launched on Pump.fun. At that time, the coin's market cap was slightly below 11,000 USD. Within the next 30 hours, the coin surged over 38,800%, reaching a market cap of about 4.40 million USD. During this period, this trader cashed out 16,200 USD through four transactions.
In the following days, the coin experienced a brief pullback before rising again, but the increase was only 180% of the previous peak. During this time, the trader added another investment of 867.35 USD through three transactions, bringing his total cost to approximately 1,101.24 USD, although much of it likely stemmed from his initial profits.
TikTok is not primarily a cryptocurrency platform, but the explosive rise of CHILLGUY has led many traders to believe that new users are entering the cryptocurrency space – perhaps it’s true.
On Tuesday, as CHILLGUY began to surge, a spokesperson from MoonPay told Decrypt that it was a historic high for Solana's trading volume, indicating that more people than ever are using its services to inject funds into the Solana ecosystem.
With a flood of new investors pouring in, CHILLGUY skyrocketed on Tuesday and Wednesday, with its market cap soaring from 11.50 million USD to 488 million USD, an increase of over 4,000%.
Over the two days, this lucky trader continued to sell off part of his holdings. As of the time of writing, data from DEX Screener indicated that the wallet had sold CHILLGUY worth 411,500 USD, while still holding nearly 700,000 USD worth of CHILLGUY.
This resulted in the wallet's total unrealized profit exceeding 1.05 million USD. However, due to the extreme volatility of the meme coin market, this profit has not yet been secured. Once market sentiment shifts, these unrealized gains could vanish instantly.
Besides CHILLGUY, the wallet also holds over 100,000 USD in derivatives and 13,700 USD in the AI meme coin Goatseus Maximus (GOAT).
Despite the token's explosive rise, its creator does not wish to ride the wave. He stated on Twitter: "I do not support/disagree with my artwork being used for anything related to cryptocurrency. Please stop bothering me."
He then set his Twitter account to private to avoid direct message harassment.
Nevertheless, there have been some so-called "homage" NFT series to CHILLGUY launched, with one of the lowest prices at 3 SOL (approximately 700 USD). Additionally, a large number of derivative meme coins have also been launched, including tokens of other characters created by Banks, such as Worried Guy (WORRIEDGUY), which Banks referred to as "flopcoin" (because its market cap failed to surpass 100,000 USD) but later soared to 10 million USD.
