Recently, Ethereum's performance in this cycle has sparked widespread dissatisfaction, with community members expressing disappointment over the Ethereum Foundation's (EF) inaction. Even some leading projects within the Ethereum ecosystem have begun to question the Ethereum Foundation. Founders of several well-known projects have voiced their concerns about the future direction of Ethereum. In response to the intense questioning from cornerstone projects in the ecosystem, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin finally spoke up today, announcing the implementation of "toll fees" for L2 networks.

Vitalik emphasized that Ethereum's goal is to build a global, censorship-resistant, and permissionless blockchain platform, and pointed out that Ethereum has demonstrated its ability to provide practical services under the joint governance of technical and social attributes. He believes that the L2 scaling route should be maintained, but L2 must fulfill its commitments, such as contributing a certain revenue to support ETH.

He noted that current Layer 2 faces challenges in scaling and heterogeneous processing, and proposed several improvement suggestions, including accelerating the expansion of Blob capacity, enhancing security, and standardizing interoperability. Additionally, Vitalik highlighted the economics of ETH, urging L2 to support ETH and allocate a portion of fees to support the Ethereum ecosystem.
