The description for Martin Grasser’s (@martingrasser) “Super Structures” in Season V of Grails is deceivingly simple: “Dry electrostatic toner on newsprint.” Upon closer inspection, small dots create a nostalgic dimensionality that alludes to a physical processing of the piece, and a greater interest in exploring two dimensional space. To the keen eye, this technique is on-par with the practice Grasser has built over the past several decades. Martin Grasser discovered typography in art school after an unfulfilling stint in finance. “It never occurred to me that people were designing those fonts…and I just fell in love.” Grasser developed his own artistic processes, often creating work with code, printing it out, and photocopying the result several times to create a distorted image.
