🚨 @Polkadot Coretime priced at $150,000 each?! Alright, guilty — a bit of clickbait. 😅 But we are facing a real Coretime Crisis right now. Two active rollups, @EnterTheMythos & @Xcavate_io, just lost access to Coretime — not because they didn’t need it, but because they missed the renewal window… …and someone bulk-bought every available core. Here’s what happened 🧵 1/ Both projects missed their renewal window — a small admin slip. But under the current design, that meant their compute rights (aka Coretime) went straight to open market. Someone bought everything, then demanded $150,000.00 USD for a single core. 🤯 2/ Yes — the current price per core might be too low. Yes — the auction system is market-based. But this is not the way to raise awareness. Rollups without Coretime can’t produce blocks. This was an exploit, not engagement. 3/ The Polkadot Fellowship member have opened a whitelisting proposal to restore access for Mythical & Xcavate. It’s a temporary fix — we don’t want to go down this path again. 4/ More importantly, this exposes a flaw in the Coretime protocol: → No safeguards to protect critical parachains → No warning system for missed renewals → No guardrails against predatory bulk-buying 5/ Now they’re proposing 2 XCM calls to increase total cores from 62 → 66, then assign 2-month leases to both rollups. ✅ Temporary block production restored ✅ Included in next region’s WorkPlan 6/ We also call on all rollups to enable auto-renew for Coretime. A proper guide will be published in the @Polkadot wiki soon. And yes — we’re pushing for long-term protocol upgrades to make sure this never happens again. 7/ To be clear — I do believe a more active Coretime market is a good thing. It reflects growing belief in Polkadot’s revenue layer. But not if that comes at the cost of halting ecosystem rollups. That’s a price we shouldn’t pay.
