Why Bitcoin Isn't Yet a "Smart" Platform for Everything The Big Picture: Even though Bitcoin is the original and most valuable cryptocurrency, it's not commonly used for complex applications like lending, borrowing, or creating fancy digital art (NFTs) in the same way other digital currencies are. Only a tiny fraction (about 2%) of all Bitcoin is currently being used in these more advanced ways. The Main Reason: Bitcoin's Simple Design Think of Bitcoin as a super-secure, very reliable digital vault. Its strength comes from its simplicity. Unlike newer digital currencies that have built-in features to understand and react to outside information (like "smart contracts" that can automatically do things based on external events), Bitcoin doesn't have these "native tools." This means if you want to use Bitcoin in a complex application, you can't just plug it in directly. You need a "bridge" or a "side road" to connect it to another system. The Problem with Today's "Bridges" Currently, when you want to use your Bitcoin for these advanced applications, you have to move it across a "bridge" to another blockchain network. The issue is, these bridges aren't built into Bitcoin's core security. They all rely on some form of trust in outside parties: Centralized Custodians: This is like giving your Bitcoin to a single company to hold, similar to a traditional bank. You have to trust them completely. Multisig Systems: Here, your Bitcoin is held in a digital safe that requires multiple keys to open (e.g., 3 out of 5 people need to agree). It's better than one person, but you still have to trust that enough of those key-holders are honest. Collateralized Federations: A group of people put up their own money as a guarantee. You trust that they'll act honestly because they have something to lose. Validator-Based Withdrawal Systems: A group of specialized computers manages the process of moving your Bitcoin. You trust these computers and their operators. The common thread? None of these systems use Bitcoin's own rock-solid security to guarantee your funds. They all introduce a layer of trust in external groups or individuals. The Ideal Solution: A "Trustless" Bridge Built into Bitcoin The best way forward would be a "bridge" that doesn't require trusting anyone outside of Bitcoin itself. This would mean the security is "anchored" directly to Bitcoin's own rules. One promising idea is a technical upgrade called OP_CAT. Imagine if Bitcoin could have "covenants" – special digital rules that dictate exactly how a specific amount of Bitcoin can be spent in the future. This would allow Bitcoin to enforce complex logic directly within its own system, creating truly secure, Bitcoin-native applications. What if OP_CAT Doesn't Happen? If OP_CAT or similar upgrades don't get implemented, other groups are working on clever alternatives: * "N-1 Trust Assumption" Protocols: Projects like BitVM, Alpen Labs, and Citrea are building bridges where you only need one honest participant to prevent fraud. They use advanced techniques like "fraud proofs" or "validity proofs" and "dispute resolution games" that can be checked and enforced using Bitcoin's existing rules. * The Trade-off: While these are more secure than current bridges, they come with a catch: the people running these systems might need to keep a lot of money ready to cover withdrawals, and they take on a financial risk if there's a dispute. The Huge Potential If we can solve this "trust" problem in connecting Bitcoin to more advanced applications, the benefits are enormous. It could unlock tens of billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin for new uses, and potentially even trillions in annual transaction volume, making Bitcoin a much more versatile and widely used digital asset. Note: trying to put a positive spin on things here. Some days I think this is all pointless. There’s so many alternatives so I try to fix a broken system.
