Understanding ArchVM: The virtual machine bringing smart contracts to Bitcoin For years, Bitcoin has been praised for its security, but criticised for its simplicity. While Ethereum evolved into a hub of programmable finance, Bitcoin remained a vault: secure, immutable… but silent. ArchVM changes that. It brings smart contract execution to Bitcoin, without changing Bitcoin itself. Here’s how. What is ArchVM? ArchVM is Arch Network’s custom-built virtual machine, a smart contract execution engine that operates alongside Bitcoin’s UTXO model, not against it. It’s built on eBPF, the same powerful low-level system used by Solana, but adapted for Bitcoin’s unique structure. Think of it as a programmable logic engine that can read, execute, and coordinate applications based on Bitcoin state, without altering consensus. Why eBPF? 🟠eBPF (Extended Berkeley Packet Filter) is known for: Speed 🟠Low-level performance 🟠Safe sandboxing of code execution Arch chose it because it balances performance and security critical when settling to Bitcoin’s final layer. ArchVM modifies the original Solana-based eBPF VM to: 🟠 Understand Bitcoin-style inputs and outputs (UTXOs) 🟠 Integrate directly with Arch’s validator mesh and consensus 🟠 Rollback & Reapply, a mechanism that removes unconfirmed transactions anchored to invalidated Bitcoin blocks in the event of a reorg , without re-executing them. Failed transactions are rejected before this stage. Stateless by Design One of ArchVM’s key innovations is how it handles stateless execution. Bitcoin itself doesn’t track account state like Ethereum, it uses UTXOs. ArchVM embraces this structure: 🟠Each contract execution reads from a known UTXO state. 🟠Execution results are cached and shared across validators. 🟠In the event of a Bitcoin reorg, transactions relying on invalidated UTXOs are discarded; they're simply removed as if they never existed. 🟠There’s no re-execution, just clean removal of transactions beyond the last confirmed Bitcoin block. This ensures consistency and integrity without unnecessary recomputation, staying true to Bitcoin’s minimalist and deterministic philosophy. What can you build with ArchVM? Anything you could build on any chain, but settled on real Bitcoin. We already have amazing projects building over ARCH- 1. Decentralised exchanges (e.g. Saturn AMM) 2. Lending protocols (e.g. ChaChing) 3. BTC-backed stablecoins (e.g. Hermetica) 4. Meme ecosystems (e.g. funkybit) And it’s just the beginning. Developers can now launch smart contracts using native BTC, not wrapped IOUs or bridged tokens. Why It matters ArchVM doesn't fork Bitcoin. It doesn’t wrap BTC.
