I agree on making the tax cuts permanent; the productivity gains will help to offset or more than offset the loss in govt revenues. For defense spending and the border wall, I can understand given the circumstances though I hope the defense component can eventually be scaled down and does not become permanent budget as spending almost always does. Welfare reform, good stuff, I like it. Here’s what doesn’t add up for me. 30-year treasury yields ripped to a 5 handle. It suggests that the market initially expected bigger or more permanent cuts on discretionary aka corruption spending but was disappointed when this didn’t happen. So let’s just pass this bill but keep in mind that the discretionary spending piece has to be dealt with soon, no matter how painful. Every bps uptick in 20-year or 30-year yields will turn thousands of Zoomers into socialists and thousands of other Zoomers into right wing extremists. This polarization will have dire consequences if allowed to play out. And if we need to raise the retirement age, then do it now while old people still work. It would be manifestly unfair to the Zoomers for such a small generation to carry on their backs the larger older generations who no longer work and who have robbed them of their birthright. Maybe AI and robots will give us all reprieve with a deus ex machina moment of infinite labor abundance but it is not prudent policy to expect that it will all play out as we hope it will. The Zoomers, born into debt bondage, fully understand that somehow they got a raw deal, that the system abandoned them to be a lost generation. They even guessed correctly that it was the Boomers who caused them this grief. But they don’t quite understand the mechanism by which they were cheated; only that they were. They don’t quite understand that a fiat money system in a democracy easily lends itself to vote buying through corrupt entitlement programs, programs which always sound good on paper (like save the whales) but always end up enriching some bureaucrat or special interest close to the nexus of state power. They don’t quite understand that abstract numbers like treasury yields and government debt have to be paid for one way or another, whether that is by them facing higher grocery prices in the future, or getting priced out of buying a home, or getting the retirement age raised on them. And because they don’t understand these things, they will invent reasons for why they are in the situation they are in. And while these invented reasons may be horribly stupid, overly simplistic, or outright insane, they will hold these beliefs because they confirm the outcomes they see. Naturally the Zoomers will revolt. Some of them will gravitate toward new leaders with extreme ideologies directing their mob anger toward the older generations. Some of them will say that COVID was not so bad. Some of them will try to seize the reins of power. And if the older generations keep a vise grip on power and keep it out of reach of the younger generations, then the younger generations will simply drop out of society like we partly see in Asia already and then all generations can all sink together. So let us right the wrongs of the past such that none of this ever comes to pass. It is more important that the future is tenable than it is to punish the wrongdoers. If we have to grant partial amnesty to the kleptocratic bureaucratic class in order to right the ship, I can live with that. If we have to pay Congress more to get rid of corruption, I can live with that. But only if any future corruption is dealt with firmly. And if all fails, then at least everyone will be one step closer to finally understanding what the libertarians always knew, that the power of the mint/purse cannot be entrusted to anyone. And so we come full circle to fiat delenda est.
