Ethereum Just Fixed Wallet UX (For Real This Time)
With yesterday's Pectra upgrade, EIP-7702 is now live — unlocking smart account functionality for all wallets.
Here’s why it can reshape Ethereum’s app experience👇

|— What is EIP-7702?
Ethereum supports two main account types: externally owned accounts (EOAs), used for basic wallets, and smart contract accounts, which are programmable and can handle complex transactions.
EOAs are simple and good for basic actions, but they lack flexibility. Smart contract wallets unlock more features, but typically require migrating assets to a new account.
EIP-7702 changes that by letting any EOA temporarily act like a smart contract. Users can access advanced features on demand without switching wallets or moving assets.
It works by letting EOAs delegate control to smart contract code through a pre-deployed contract address referenced in a transaction’s authorization data.
In practice, this means every standard Ethereum wallet can now mimic the capabilities of a smart account.
The design is flexible, making EIP-7702 1) composable with current smart contract patterns, and 2) compatible with standards like ERC-4337 (account abstraction via alt mempool) and ERC-6551 (NFTs as smart accounts).
|— Better UX for onchain culture
There are many paths to account abstraction, but EIP-7702 brings smart functionality to all EOAs — no migration needed.
This unlocks critical UX improvements for onchain culture apps, which increasingly depend on smooth, intuitive experiences:
→ ⛽ Sponsored gas – Let apps or wallets cover gas fees for easy onboarding
→ 🪙 Pay with ERC-20s – Use stablecoins instead of ETH for transactions
→ 🛒 Bundled transactions – Run complex actions in one click
→ ✅ Flexible signing – Use WebAuthn and other standards beyond private keys
→ 📌 Social recovery – Set up guardians to recover access
→ Ethereum Just Fixed Wallet UX (For Real This Time) Session keys – Give apps limited, time-based access to your wallet
These features open up new possibilities for cultural use cases:
+ A creator marketplace where listing NFTs, splitting royalties, and claiming payments happen in one step
+ Onchain games using session keys, USDC gas, or sponsored interactions
+ Social apps where alt wallets can have spending caps or restricted permissions
And they’re live now.
For example, @privy_io — the embedded wallet provider used by @blackbird_xyz, @cryptothegame_, @opensea, and @zora — already supports EIP-7702 from day one. This lets many apps offer smart account features without overhauling their UX. With more integrations coming, EIP-7702 is poised to spread across crypto’s cultural corners.
|— What comes next?
Are we seeing the end of wallet sprawl?
Today, many users juggle separate wallets for different purposes — one for holding, another for playing. But if every EOA can act like a smart contract account, users won’t need to split identity or assets across accounts.
Much of crypto’s UX pain stems from EOA limitations like multi-step flows and manual gas payments. EIP-7702 improves onboarding, setting the stage for more casual, culture-driven apps to emerge.
It also unlocks new mechanics: session keys, flexible signing, and delegated logic. Think games where you delegate power to NPCs, or NFT platforms with bids that auto-expire per custom rules.
Ethereum is becoming a more expressive, user-friendly canvas for culture. EIP-7702 blurs the line between simple wallets and smart accounts, giving everyone tools that used to require advanced setups.
For devs, that means fewer tradeoffs between UX and decentralization. For creators, it means programmable ownership and richer interactions — without friction.
Overall, a new smart wallet era is here — and best of all, your current wallet’s already ready.
