Deutsche Telekom has partnered with Metzler Bank to pilot a Bitcoin mining infrastructure utilizing surplus energy. The mining will use electricity from renewable sources that would otherwise go unused due to insufficient grid input capacity and/or lack of storage options. Deutsche Telekom MMS is responsible for the operation of the equipment and collaborates with Metzler Bank to identify and analyze the test operations and data evaluation.

PANews, November 4 - According to official news, Deutsche Telekom's subsidiary MMS has partnered with Bankhaus Metzler to launch a pilot project aimed at utilizing surplus energy to operate Bitcoin mining infrastructure. The mining will employ electricity generated from renewable energy sources that would otherwise go unused due to insufficient grid input capacity and/or lack of storage options. The pilot project aims to provide effective on-site data and insights for the planning of subsequent projects.

The Bitcoin mining operation for the pilot project is hosted by Metis Solutions GmbH based in Dresden. The mining containers are located within the premises of Riva GmbH Engineering, a manufacturer of metal and glass facades in Bucken. The company operates its own photovoltaic power generation system. With many years of experience in Web3 infrastructure, Deutsche Telekom MMS is responsible for the operation of the equipment and collaborates with Bankhaus Metzler to identify and analyze test operations and data evaluations.

Since 2020, Deutsche Telekom MMS has been providing infrastructure for various decentralized protocols in the Web3 space, including Chainlink, Fetch.ai, and Polygon. Since 2023, Deutsche Telekom has also operated a Bitcoin node, thus expanding its portfolio to proof-of-work networks for the first time.
