The way a blockchain is launched defines its ethical character—forever. Three primary forms dominate the industry today: Proof of Authority (PoA), Proof of Stake (PoS), and Proof of Work (PoW). PoA is simplest; a trusted group of validators sequences blocks through a multisig system. While operationally straightforward, PoA centralizes authority, leaving block sequencing in the hands of a few. Convenient, but you have to trust the authorities. Well, crypto is all about not having to trust authorities! Even the most successful PoA chains never really get this awkward fact out of their brand. PoS offers improved security by having multiple validators put tokens at risk to ensure honest behavior. But PoS launches are basically circular. The system relies on token value and initial token distribution to secure the network, which means you need a pre-mine or, ahem, "Token Generation Event." No matter how successful or eventually decentralized the chain becomes, it will always be colored by the disproportionate wealth gained by the early insiders—and not necessarily by merit (though sometimes by merit). PoW, exemplified by Bitcoin, demands computational resources to validate and sequence blocks. PoW eliminates central control by requiring miners to compete openly without pre-distributed tokens, allowing for the most genuinely fair start possible. Although resource-intensive, unpredictable, and potentially chaotic, if successful long-term, a fairly launched PoW chain is the only type of chain with a prospect for becoming civilization-grade infrastructure. If it fails, it fails. But if it wins, it deserves to win. For everyone will own exactly the share they deserve: however much they obtain through their own intelligence, foresight, effort, and skill.
